Christmas in Southend-on-Sea

Actor Toby Vaughan recently revealed that he saw his first ever Christmas show in Southend-on-Sea and so is delighted to be returning to The Palace Theatre this time on the stage as the über brat Bradley Bartleby!

The Santa Trap company have had a great run - rehearsing in Southampton and opening at Alnwick Playhouse.  From there they travelled south to perform near sell-out performances at Kings Hall in Ilkley.  Next stop is Southend and here they stay to play over the Christmas period!

There are still tickets left, so if you haven't got yours yet there's still time.  The Santa Trap runs through until 31st Dec and we hope to see you there.

In the meantime we'd like to wish all our creative collaborators, venues and audiences a very happy festive period and a wonderfully creative New Year.  Do keep checking back for more Belfield & Slater news throughout 2017!

Bradley Bartleby Is Back...

...and this time he's more beastly than ever!

We are delighted that our latest family musical play The Santa Trap returns to the stage this Christmas.  Based on the award-winning children's picture book by Jonathan Emmett and Poly Bernatene, The Santa Trap tells the tale of the brattish Bradley Bartleby and his attempts to snare Santa.

With a new cast of talented actor/musicians this updated production settles at the Palace Theatre, Southend-on-sea over the Christmas period (23rd -31st Dec).  Before that it will visit Alnwick Playhouse and Kings Hall, Ilkley (see the show page for full dates).

Yes It really is a great show.  Such fun, my two children just loved it! (Audience member)

Here Be Monsters - IN REHEARSAL

For the past three weeks we have been rehearsing HERE BE MONSTERS (as well as The Santa Trap, although that show doesn't open for a while yet!) and we have been lucky enough to rehearse onstage at the Theatre Royal Winchester where we will open the show later this week.

Here are a few sneaky peaks at what we've been up to - including some of the fabulous puppets made for us by puppet genius Marc Parrett.  (watch out - mild spoiler alert!)

"...something TALL and TENTACLED..."

"...something STRONG and SNAKELIKE..." (and actor Josh Sneesby too!)

Actor Toby Vaughan practices fending off "something FIERCE and FAST"

While we were rehearsing Jonathan Emmett (author of both HERE BE MONSTERS and THE SANTA TRAP) came into to see how things were progressing.

Had a lovely afternoon at the SANTA TRAP and HERE BE MONSTERS rehearsals. Smashing adaptations with great live music. I’m one happy author.

HERE BE MONSTERS opens this Saturday (19th September) at Theatre Royal Winchester.  Click the link for tickets or for more info about the tours either go to our show pages or visit Mayflower Productions website.

Here Be Monsters & The Santa Trap

Next week Belfield & Slater begin rehearsals for two new musical adaptations.  Based on HERE BE MONSTERS and THE SANTA TRAP, books by bestselling children's author Jonathan Emmett and illustrated by Poly Bernatene, these two exciting shows will be produced in collaboration with Mayflower Theatre (Southampton) and will tour the UK this Autumn/Winter.

"And we fly, see how we fly!"

The run of our new adaptation of Peter Pan has got off to a flying start, with audiences and critics responding very positively to the production at The Watermill Theatre.

Here's what press have had to say so far:

"Once again the partnership of Robin Belfield and Simon Slater have come up trumps in this hugely enjoyable and pacey adaptation"  (British Theatre Guide)

"Arguably one of the most engaging tributes to Neverland"  (The Stage)

And some of the comments from the young audience members:

"Thank you for a great time.  I want to come again."

"Great play!  Really funny!"

"My favourite part was when the mermaids started dancing and singing."

To Neverland!

Production week begins here at The Watermill Theatre.  Neil Irish's fantastic set is taking shape  with Lawrence T Doyle's fab team busy with ship masts, windows, palm trees, vines and houses for Tinker Bell!  Mark Dymock's lights are being focused, Rob Jones is doing his sound checks; and up in the wardrobe Amanda and her lovely team are putting the finishing touches to the costumes - extra leaf detail for Peter, feathers for the Indian Chief and lace cuffs for Captain Hook.

The Watermill marketing team are also busy making the final edit of the show's trailer so we hope to be posting that very soon.  In the meantime here are a few sneaky pics.
